Removals Sydenham

Removals across Sydenham, home to the oldest nature reserve London Wildlife Trust manages — a genuine remnant of ancient woodland, not a landscaped park.

Sydenham sits on some of the highest ground in the area, and Sydenham Hill Wood — on its western edge — is a real survivor: it's the largest remaining fragment of the Great North Wood, an ancient forest that once stretched across much of south London, and it's been London Wildlife Trust's oldest managed nature reserve since 1981. Inside it are the ruins of a Victorian folly, the old disused railway tunnel from the long-closed Nunhead to Crystal Palace line (now home to a bat roost), and over 200 recorded species of trees and wildflowers.

Away from the wood, Sydenham is Victorian terraced housing on noticeably hillier streets than the flatter parts of the borough nearer Lewisham town centre — which occasionally means a short uphill or downhill carry to wherever a van can park, rather than loading directly outside. The area takes in the smaller neighbourhoods around it too — Sydenham Hill, Upper Sydenham and Lower Sydenham — which we treat as part of the same local knowledge and coverage.

Local knowledge

Moving in and around Sydenham

Sydenham's high ground is also why the Crystal Palace ended up nearby after it was moved from Hyde Park in 1854 — the former Crystal Palace site sits just across the local boundary, and the old railway line built to serve it is the same one whose disused tunnel now runs under Sydenham Hill Wood.

FAQ

Common questions about moving in Sydenham

Do you cover Upper and Lower Sydenham as well?

Yes — we treat these as part of the wider Sydenham area and cover them under this page.

Is parking difficult on Sydenham's hillier streets?

It varies street to street — tell us your address and we'll plan the closest practical loading spot.

Is Sydenham close to Forest Hill?

Yes, they're direct neighbours — both sit on the same high ground and both back onto remnants of the old Great North Wood, though Forest Hill's better-known landmark is the Horniman Museum rather than Sydenham Hill Wood. See our Forest Hill removals page for that area specifically.
