Removals around Lee and Lee Green — home to a Grade II*-listed 18th-century manor house and the public gardens built around it.
Manor House Gardens, a 3.3-hectare park at the heart of Lee, grew out of the grounds of a private house built in 1771–72 for Thomas Lucas, a wealthy Guy's Hospital benefactor and MP. The Baring family later owned it, used the grounds as pleasure gardens with a lake and ice house, and by the 1890s the house itself had even served as a military academy before London County Council bought the estate in 1901 and opened the gardens to the public the following year.
That kind of grand 18th- and 19th-century estate history is still visible in Lee's housing — the Lee Manor conservation area has some genuinely large period villas set back from the road, alongside more typical Victorian terraced streets elsewhere in the area. Lee Green marks the area's well-known local junction and small parade of shops, sitting between Blackheath's period housing and Hither Green's terraces, which means we see a real range of property sizes here rather than one uniform type.
Manor House Gardens still has its original walled flower garden and ornamental pond from the 1773 layout, restored in 1999–2000 — a rare survival of a private 18th-century pleasure garden that's now simply the local park.
