Moving Guide

What Size Removal Van Do I Need?

A rough guide to van sizes for different moves — useful for budgeting, though we'll always confirm the right size when you book.

Removal vans generally come in a few standard size categories. Here's roughly what each suits, as a starting point for thinking about your move.

Small van (e.g. a short-wheelbase van)

Suits a single room, a studio flat, or a handful of larger items — enough for one or two seating pieces, some boxes, and small furniture. This is the typical size for a man and van or small move booking.

Medium van (e.g. a long-wheelbase van)

Suits a 1-bedroom flat, or a slightly larger part-load — a bed, sofa, wardrobe, dining furniture and a reasonable number of boxes.

Large van (e.g. a Luton van with tail lift)

Suits a 2-3 bedroom flat or house — enough capacity for a full bedroom set in more than one room, living room furniture, white goods, and a full complement of boxes. A tail lift is particularly useful here for heavier items.

Multiple vans or a larger vehicle

Needed for a larger house (4+ bedrooms), a house with a garage or loft full of belongings, or a full office relocation — where either the volume or the awkward mix of items (furniture, files, equipment) needs more than one vehicle's worth of space and a bigger team to match.

Why we don't just ask you to guess

Van size is closely tied to team size and how long a move takes — an undersized van means multiple trips and a longer day; an oversized one costs more than necessary. Rather than asking you to estimate a van size yourself, tell us the property type, number of bedrooms, and roughly how much furniture is involved, and we'll size the vehicle and team to match.

FAQ

Common questions

What if I'm not sure how much I have to move?

That's normal — tell us the property type and number of rooms, and mention anything unusually large (a piano, several wardrobes, bulky furniture), and we'll size the van and team appropriately.

Is it cheaper to book a smaller van and do extra trips myself?

It can seem that way upfront, but multiple trips take considerably longer overall, and increase the risk of items being damaged in transit. A correctly sized van is usually the more efficient option for both time and cost.

Do you use vans with tail lifts for heavier items?

For larger moves and heavier furniture, yes — tell us about any particularly heavy or awkward items when you book.
