Removals around Crofton Park, home to the only intact 1950s dance hall left in London.
Crofton Park sits directly next to Brockley and shares some of its Victorian terraced streets, but it has its own centre of gravity: the Rivoli Ballroom on Brockley Road. The building opened in 1913 as the Crofton Park Picture Palace, one of the earliest cinemas in Lewisham, was rebuilt in an art deco style in the 1930s as the Rivoli Cinema, and then converted into a ballroom in 1958–59 by local businessman Leonard Tomlin — complete with a sprung maple dance floor and crystal chandeliers. It's now the only 1950s ballroom left intact anywhere in London, still in regular use and increasingly booked for music videos and concerts.
For removals, Crofton Park is largely residential terraced housing, much of it converted into flats in the same style as neighbouring Brockley — but it's worth treating as its own area rather than an extension of Brockley, since it has a genuinely separate identity, its own station on the London Overground, and its own high street of independent shops.
Crofton Park's southern edge meets the Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries — two Victorian burial grounds opened in 1858 and merged in 1948, now managed as a wildlife-rich green space. It's a real, physical link between Crofton Park, Brockley and Ladywell that shows up in local walking routes more than in any council boundary line.
