Removals Bellingham

Removals across the Bellingham estate — built by the London County Council in the early 1920s specifically to rehouse families from Deptford and Bermondsey.

Bellingham was built by the LCC between 1920 and 1923, a few years before its larger neighbour Downham, on farmland — Bellingham Farm and part of White House Farm — bought from the local manor. It's smaller than Downham, at just over 2,000 homes, and was built under the Addison Act specifically to move families out of overcrowded, poorer parts of Deptford and Bermondsey and into good-quality housing with gardens.

The estate was laid out around Bellingham Green, a central open space with six tree-lined roads converging on it — a deliberate, formal design rather than a grid. For a move, that means most addresses are two-storey houses with gardens on a small number of consistently wide residential roads, which generally makes van access straightforward compared with the narrower Victorian streets nearer Lewisham town centre.

Because Bellingham was built as one complete scheme in just three years, a lot of moves here are within the estate itself — a family needing more space, or downsizing from a larger Bellingham house to a smaller one nearby — as well as moves in and out of the area.

Local knowledge

Moving in and around Bellingham

The name Bellingham is much older than the estate — it comes from the medieval Manor of Bellingham, and was revived in 1892 when a new railway station on the Nunhead to Shortlands line took the name, decades before the LCC built the estate around it. Until the 1920s this was still open farmland near the old hamlet of Southend, which is why the estate has such a self-contained, planned feel rather than growing organically street by street.

FAQ

Common questions about moving in Bellingham

Is Bellingham mostly houses with gardens?

Yes — like the neighbouring Downham estate, almost every property was built as a two-storey house with a garden, so most moves here are full house removals rather than flat or man-and-van jobs.

How is Bellingham different from Downham for a move?

Bellingham is the smaller and slightly older of the two LCC estates (just over 2,000 homes, built 1920–23, laid out around Bellingham Green) compared with Downham's roughly 7,000 homes built a few years later. Both have similar wide-road access, but see our Downham removals page for that estate specifically.

Do you cover moves onto or off the Bellingham Green roads specifically?

Yes — we cover the whole estate, including the six roads that converge on Bellingham Green.
