Removals Blackheath

Removals around Blackheath village — designated London's very first conservation area in 1968, and still shaped by a Roman road.

Blackheath was designated a conservation area jointly by Lewisham and Greenwich councils in 1968 — the first conservation area created anywhere in London, later extended in 2001 to take in more of Belmont Hill and Belmont Park. Most of the village's buildings date from around 1790 to 1880, a mix of Georgian and Victorian styles rising from the station up to the heath itself, and the area is still crossed by the Old Dover Road, part of the original Roman Watling Street.

The railway didn't reach Blackheath until 1849, and its arrival is what triggered the area's expansion into the grander Victorian terraces and set-piece villa developments — often built in matching pairs or formal rows — that make up much of the conservation area today. That combination of protected Georgian terraces and larger Victorian houses means moves here are often bigger jobs than a flat move, on streets that are narrower and have less off-street parking than newer parts of the borough.

Local knowledge

Moving in and around Blackheath

Blackheath Common — the open heath the village and station take their name from — sits right alongside the conservation area, and the village's small, self-contained high street has a genuinely different feel from Lewisham's main town centre a couple of miles away, despite being in the same borough.

FAQ

Common questions about moving in Blackheath

Do you move larger period houses, not just flats?

Yes — Blackheath's Georgian and Victorian houses are often larger than a typical flat move, and we size the team and vehicle accordingly.

Is parking difficult on Blackheath's residential streets?

It varies by street — some are narrower with limited resident parking, a legacy of the area's Georgian and Victorian layout. Tell us your address when you book and we'll factor it into the plan.

Does the conservation area status affect a move?

Not directly — it governs what residents can change about a building's exterior, not removals access. It does mean many original features and narrower original doorways are still in place on older properties.
